Turbochargers and superchargers are both forced induction systems. Adding a larger capacity turbo/super charger to an engine provides the largest power gains with horsepower and torque potential, without significantly increasing its weight.
Turbochargers and supercharger compress the air flowing into the engine, which lets the engine squeeze more air (and fuel) into the combustion chamber, yielding more power from each explosion in each cylinder.
The difference between turbochargers and superchargers are how they are powered. With a supercharger, there is a belt that connects directly to the engine, powered just like a water pump. With a turbocharger, powers is derived as exhaust runs through a turbine which spins the compressor.
