APR is pleased to present the ultimate engine control unit (ECU) upgrade for the 1.8T EA888 Gen 3 engine. APR’s ECU upgrade is available in octane-specific variations and is conveniently flashed to the vehicle’s factory ECU through the OBD-II port without any physical modification to the factory ECU.

The ECU’s Simos 12 engine management system is responsible for proper operation of the engine during constantly changing environmental and load conditions. With built in compensational data for environmental variables and varying load conditions, the factory ECU is far more complex and intelligent than units found in other vehicle makes and marques.

APR's Calibration Engineers spent months calibrating the engine management system, including many hours of chassis dyno development. With a thorough understanding of the ECU’s torque structure, APR’s Calibration Engineers properly increased engine load to produce more power and torque across the entire power band. APR’s ECU Upgrade increases boost pressure, optimizes ignition timing, cam timing, valve lift, lambda and more to produce higher output!

APR ECU Upgrade Stages

APR’s ECU Upgrades are available in multiple stages and torque levels, supporting various octanes both with or without any hardware or transmission modifications. Specific software is available for use with a high flow downpipe exhaust system, while all stages are fully compatible with an upgraded intake, intercooler, catback exhaust, or other minor bolt on modifications. Finally, each stage is offered with special “Low Torque” software, designed to limit peak torque for use with an unmodified factory manual clutch, or DSG transmission.

Stage I ECU Upgrade

APR’s ECU upgrades are one of the best horsepower-per-dollar modifications for the new 1.8T engine. The APR Stage I ECU Upgrade is designed to work without requiring other changes to the vehicle’s hardware. With the ECU Upgrade alone, APR’s Calibration Experts measured higher peak figures of 288 ft-lbs of torque and 243 horsepower with 98 RON fuel. Large gains were seen throughout the power band, including an additional 70 ft-lbs of torque and 66 horsepower over the 177 PS model, and even higher figures over the lower output 140 PS models!

Installation Options

APR's ECU Upgrade is able to be installed by APR's professional dealer network or by APR directly. Most late model applications are available to be installed via DirectPort programming without removing your ECU or even opening the hood. DirectPort Programming is not available for all models and in these rare cases EMCS Modules are able to be soldered to the ECU.

DirectPort Programming is another industry first brought to you by APR. DirectPort Programming is also referred to as "flashing" the ECU with the new operating software contained in APR's ECU Upgrade. No more soldering additional hardware to expensive and delicate factory electronics. DirectPort Programming facilitates ease of installation and offers new features to give you even more flexibility with your OEM ECU. DirectPort Programming is only available by bringing your car to an APR dealer or by mailing your ECU to APR directly.

- ECU Revision Notice: Multiple ECU revisions exist for each platform. APR software may be temporarily unavailable when factory updates are applied. An APR dealer can check availability in person, or over the phone if the ECU boxcode/revision is known.

- Spark Plug Notice: APR recommends using colder heat-range spark plugs (Ex: NGK-R7437-9), properly gapped to a tighter gap (Ex: 0.024" ±0.002" or 0.6mm ±0.05mm), properly installed and torqued (Ex: Per the manufacturers specifications), and maintained with a shorter changer interval (Ex: 10,000-15,000 mi or 16,000-24,000 km).
