VW & Audi Performance Parts: What are Turbochargers?

Posted by

If you want to get the largest performance gains without significantly increasing the weight of your Audi or Volkswagen, then you may want to install a turbocharger kit. Adding a forced induction system to an engine will dramatically transform a vehicle in terms of speed and power. Such an upgrade can yield up to 25-50% power gains, and in many application, add more than 100 horsepower to the stock set up.  Below you will see ATP turbo kits for Audi and VW that are capable of yielding 500 horse.

Turbochargers are forced induction systems that will significantly boost engine potency, compressing air that flows into the engine. This lets the engine squeeze more air and fuel into the combustion chamber, yielding more power form each explosion in each cylinder. Turbochargers are powered through the exhaust stream that runs through a turbine and spins the compressor.

Turbo Performance Parts

Each kit will include its own distinct set of components. Here are some common parts to familiarize yourself with:

  • Tuners are recommended for turbo installs.
  • Exhaust Manifold is the first component of a vehicle’s exhaust system, collecting exhaust gasses from individual ports and keeping exhaust velocity high.(See this exhaust manifold for 1.8T)
  • Downpipes connect the engine to the rear exhaust, supporting air flow transition throughout the exhaust. (Example: ATP Downpipe for Audi & VW)
  • Inlet Pipes connect to the turbo, supporting smoother transitions for increased throttle response and turbo spool up.
  • Turbo Outlet Pipes provide unrestricted airflow from the turbocharger to the intercooler.
  • Charge piping allows for smooth airflow.
  • Mass Airflow Housing relieves restriction to support airflow.
  • Fuel Pumps handle the extra flow to provide adequate fuel.
  • Forged Billet BOV (blow off valve) relieves pressure from compressor while retaining compressor speed.
  • Oil and Coolant Lines run the turbo’s much needed oil supply to lubricate and maintain performance, while the water lines prevent hot oil from hardening from rapidly cooling down.
  • Intercoolers are recommended to prevent jet lag and keep the temperature low.
